What is amniotic fluid?
Amniotic fluid is a substance composed by water (more than 90%) and mineral salts, as well as other substances necessary for the growth of the fetus.
Functions of amniotic fluid
Amniotic fluid leakage
During pregnancy, baby is surrounded by a fluid-filled membranous sac called the amniotic sac. When the membrane of the amniotic sac ruptures, this is known as water breaking or leaking. Pregnant women may feel a gush of fluid or constant leaking of small amounts of watery fluid from the vagina
Water breaking, or leaking, usually occurs shortly before or during labour. On the other hand, water breaking can also occur at any stage of pregnancy, or before labour starts. It is called "Pre-labour Rupture of Membranes". Most pregnant women will go into spontaneous labour within 24 hours of the membranes rupturing.
With increasing duration of time following rupture of the membrane, there is an increasing risk of infection of the womb and the baby. Hence, you should go to hospital immediately once water breaks for assessment by an obstetrician.
Premature rupture of membrane (PROM)
Sometimes the membranes break before a woman goes into labor. When the water breaks early, it is called premature rupture of membranes (PROM). Most women will go into labor on their own within 24 hours.
Preterm premature rupture of membrane (PPROM)
If the water breaks before the 37th week of pregnancy, it is called preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM). The earlier your water breaks, the more serious it is for you and your baby.
Ways to differentiate amniotic fluid, vaginal discharge and urinary incontinence
AMNIOCHECK changes colors when it comes in contact with fluid of pH levels greater than or equal to 6.5 units. Amniotic fluid pH levels are greater than 6.5.
How to use AMNIOCHECK?
Simply attach the special AMNIOCHECK to your underwear and get on with your day.
Probable amniotic fluid leak
If there is a color change, partial or complete, to blue or green (any intensity), in any size, shape or location, on the panty liner, the fluid leak is probably amniotic fluid.
Probable negative result
If the panty liner did not change color (remained yellow or turned yellow after 15 minutes), the vaginal wetness was probably not caused by amniotic fluid.
